ENTREPRENEUR - May 4 - Verizon will sell its stake in Yahoo and AOL for $5B. The new conglomerate formed by AOL and Yahoo will be owned by private equity firm Apollo Global Management and known simply as Yahoo. Verizon will maintain a 10% stake in the business. Verizon bought AOL in May 2015 for $4.4B, and Yahoo in Jul 2016 for $4.83B.

Twitter Soars After Talk Of Yahoo Acquisition
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS - Jan 8 - Twitter shares gained 6.5% to $38.76 Tuesday, easily the biggest jump in the SV150 -- the next largest percentage gain was 2.3% by Rocket Fuel, and no other major Silicon Valley tech company added more than 2% on the day. Most of Twitter's gains came in the afternoon session, after Levinsohn told CNBC that he believes Twitter should buy the core business of Yahoo.

MessageMe Bought By Yahoo For $30-$40M
TECH CRUNCH - Oct 4 - MessageMe, a messaging app, has been acquired by Yahoo. The app will close down in Nov 7th. MessageMe had also been courted by Snapchat as well as an app maker out of Europe, Truecaller. The price that Yahoo will be paying to acqui-hire MessageMe is ~$30-$40M.

Yahoo To Stop Log-in With Facebook & Google IDs
REUTERS - Mar 5 - Yahoo will stop letting consumers access its various online services, including Fantasy Sports and photo-sharing site Flickr, by signing-in with their Facebook or Google credentials. The change will require users to register for a Yahoo ID in order to use any of the Internet portal's services.

TECH CRUNCH - June 26 - The European data protection activists have filed new complaints under regional data protection law targeting Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Skype and Yahoo for their alleged collaboration with the NSA’s Prism data collection program. The companies have subsidiaries in Ireland, Luxembourg and Germany. ”We want a clear statement by the authorities if a European company may simply give foreign intelligence agencies access to its customer data. If this turns out to be legal, then we might have to change the laws,” noted activists' speaker, Max Schrems.

Yahoo Board Approves Tumblr Acquisition
MASHABLE - May 19 - Yahoo's board of directors has approved a $1.1 billion acquisition of blogging platform Tumblr. The deal is reportedly an all-cash acquisition. CEO Marissa Mayer was interested in the platform's younger-skewing user base, and had been in talks with the board about Tumblr for the last six weeks. Yahoo has purchased 10 startups since Mayer became CEO. Those companies include Stamped, a mobile app for finding and recommending activities, news browsing app Summly, and to-do list app Astrid. Tumblr has grown to a giant since its launch in 2007. It had ~67M unique visitors in April, according to Quantcast, and 18M of those came from mobile.

Zynga Acquisition Rumors
SMALL CAP NETWORK - Mar 13 - Speculations that Zynga might be acquired by Yahoo! comes from comments made by the latter’s M&A head last week about working on two “significant” acquisitions and about six smaller talent “acqhires.” An acquisition makes sense for Yahoo! as its been performing better lately. In fact, Yahoo!’s stock is up around 53.1% over the past year thanks in part to the performance of the Alibaba Group in China plus new leadership is in place. Given Zynga’s deflated share price of under $4 and a market cap of under $3 billion – it would be a cheap acquisition that Yahoo! could almost pay cash for. But CEO Marissa Mayer said that Yahoo! wants to focus on offering products and services based around “daily habits” like checking stocks, searching the Internet and doing email. Internet gaming is probably not a daily habit for most Internet users right now.

Facebook And Yahoo Reportedly Seeking Search Partnership
CNET NEWS - Nov 18 - Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg have been talking about the two companies working together on a search engine. Mayer and Sandberg are former colleagues at Google, and understand what search can do to super-charge a business. Mayer is looking for ways to revive Yahoo's products and engineering focus since she took the CEO job in July. The two companies recently resolved their patent spat and Yahoo just prior to Mayer coming on board, and Yahoo was an early to integrate with Facebook Connect. Currently, Yahoo outsources its search to Microsoft. That deal hasn't gone so well financially, and Yahoo may exit the deal next year. The door could be open for a Yahoo-Facebook alliance, but it could take years to create a competitive search engine. It may be that Microsoft is not totally out of the picture.

Yahoo Posts Revenues Of $1.22B With Earnings At 27 Cents Per Share
TECH CRUNCH - July 17 - Yahoo has reported its Q2 2012 earnings at $1.22B, down 1% from Q2 2011. This is a net income of $327M with an earnings of 27 center per share, compared to a net income of $237 million and 18 cent earnings per share last year. Yahoo's total cash position as of June 30 was $2.401B.

Yahoo! To Shut Down Indonesian Social Networking Site Koprol
JAKARTA GLOBE - July 2 - The company laid off 2K employees in March. By August 28, the site will go offline. Yahoo! bought Koprol developer SkyEight for an undisclosed sum two and a half years ago. At the time, the service had 75K registered users and offered Indonesians a way to post photos, restaurant reviews and status updates with location-specific tags. Yahoo! had hoped that Koprol would catch on like Foursquare did in the US. By 2011, Koprol had blossomed to include 1.5M users across Southeast Asia. But that didn’t save the social networking site from the chopping block. We are shutting down or transitioning a number of products that did not meaningfully drive revenue or engagement,” the company said in a press release.

Yahoo Escalates Patent War With Facebook
MASHABLE - Apr 29 - Yahoo is adding two more patent-infringement claims to the 10 it filed for back in March. Yahoo specifically calls out Facebook for using recently acquired patents as the basis of its lawsuit — even though some of the patents in Yahoo’s claim were acquired as well. A quick recap: Shortly after appointing former PayPal executive Scott Thompson as CEO, Yahoo warned Facebook that the social network was infringing on its intellectual property, specifically 10 patents that relate to Internet technologies. It then went ahead and sued Facebook a few weeks later. Facebook, rather than try to end the suit with a quick settlement, set out to arm itself for a retaliatory strike. Facebook quickly acquired many patents from both IBM and Microsoft. Facebook also countersued Yahoo — saying that it, too, was guilty of patent infringement.

MASHABLE - Apr 4 - Facebook is countersuing Yahoo, denying Yahoo’s allegations that Facebook infringed on the company’s patents — and claiming Yahoo is actually infringing on Facebook’s patents. Facebook also says Yahoo is in violation of some of its patents, including patents the company holds for “generating a feed of stories personalized for members of a social network,” and “tagging digital media.” Facebook says it plans to fight the original lawsuit. Yahoo formally went after Facebook in March, claiming the company violated 10 of its patents.
