MASHABLE - Signal, the secure messaging app beloved by millions of privacy-conscious users, is beta-testing an Instagram-inspired Stories feature. The app announced testers would soon have access to a new way of sharing photos, videos, and even texts. Stories, of course, are end-to-end encrypted just like any other message you send via Signal.

Signal, the Encrypted Messaging App, Appoints a President
NEW YORK TIMES - Signal, the encrypted messaging app, has tapped Meredith Whittaker, a former adviser to the FTC chair and an AI expert who protested Google's use of the technology for military projects, as its president. Signal, which is committed to its users' privacy, does not know how many people use the app, although the number appears to be growing. The app has been downloaded ~100M times from the Google Play store, and it ranks 15th among social networking apps on Apple's App Store.

Signal CEO Steps Down, Replaced by WhatsApp Co-Founder in Interim
IPHONE IN CANADA - Signal CEO, Moxie Marlinspike, has stepped down as the encrypted social networking platform leader. In the meantime, he will remain on the board of Signal as he transitions out of the CEO role. In the interim, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton "has volunteered to serve as interim CEO during the search period." Acton is on the Signal Foundation board.

Messaging App Signal Stops Working in China, Website Inaccessible
INDIA.COM - Mar 17 - The encrypted messaging application, Signal, has mysteriously stopped working in China and the app's website is also inaccessible. Signal users in the country have said that the app is accessible only through the use of a VPN on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, the app was still available on Apple's China app store, and both the app and its website appeared to be working normally in Hong Kong. Signal was already unavailable on third-party Android stores in China, where Google services are largely blocked. On several occasions, Signal had previously stopped working in China without a VPN for no reason given, only for usage to resume.

Signal and Telegram Downloads Surpassed Facebook's Messenger
FORTUNE - Feb 3 - The number of monthly downloads of Telegram and Signal has skyrocketed since Oct and, in Jan, surpassed Facebook's Messenger. The growth in downloads for Signal has been especially pronounced, shooting from ~1.2M a year ago to ~30M by late January. Messenger and WhatsApp are used by 1.3B and 570M, respectively, compared to 46M daily users for Telegram and 13M for Signal. The reasons for the apps' recent popularity regarding concerns over Facebook's privacy practices.
