BUSINESS STANDARD - Hashtags "GoodbyeTwitter" and "Orkut" started trending on twitter hailing an end to the microblogging website. Orkut is an old social networking site which got shut down in 2014. Some users tweeted reminiscing the time they spent writing "testimonials" on the now closed social-media platform that peaked amongst millennials, before Facebook and Twitter emerged as popular social media platforms. And some asked to bring back Orkut, as they announced their exit from Twitter.

VENTURE BEAT - June 30 - Orkut will shut down on September 30. Users will not be allowed to create new Orkut accounts starting today, and Google will offer existing users the ability to export their data until September 2016. Although Orkut never took off in the U.S., the social network was once one of the most popular sites in Brazil.

In Brazil, Google Paves Facebook's Path To The Top
IB TIMES - Feb 15 - Facebook said its number of active users in Brazil had nearly tripled in 2011, finally placing it ahead of Google Inc's Orkut service as the No. 1 social network in the country. Much of the credit for that may belong to Google, analysts say. While a growing economy and easier credit gave Brazilians the ability to purchase computers and broadband connections, Google's Orkut gave them a reason to do so in the first place. "Until Orkut came along in 2004, Internet use in Brazil was stagnant," said analyst José Calazans of market research firm IBOPEnielsen in Sao Paulo. Now many of those people are moving to Facebook." Orkut's failure to innovate in line with users' expectations created an opportunity for Facebook to step in, offering new apps and games, as well as the ability to connect with people beyond Brazil.

Orkut App Arrives On iPhone, iPad
MASHABLE – Jan 19 – Google-owned Brazilian social networking site Orkut has finally gone mobile, announcing its app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The app will allow users to post status updates, photos, and chat with others on the go. The announcement comes shortly after it was revealed that Facebook overtook Orkut as Brazil’s most popular social networking site in December. The app is now available for download in the Apple App Store.

Facebook In Brazil Finally Pushes Past Orkut
TECH CRUNCH – Jan 17 – comScore reports that in 2011, Brazilian Facebook users increased by nearly 24 million to surpass incumbent Orkut in December, reaching a total of 36.1 million monthly uniques. Orkut did see some growth in 2011, from 32.7 million to 34.4 million in Brazil, but still fall behind Facebook. Other social networks that saw growth in Brazil include Twitter, Latin America-focused social gaming company Vostu, Google+, Tumblr and LinkedIn. comScore also noted that woman are now spending more time on the site than man, and younger demographics are more likely to be on than older ones.

Farmville Helped Facebook Beat Orkut
DNA INDIA - Nov 16 - In May this year, Facebook beat Orkut as the top social networking destination in India. According to Vizisense, which tracks web audience measurement in India, social media apps like Farmville, Mafia Wars, Cafe World have been the biggest contributors to Facebook’s success in India. Farmville clearly leads the pack and other apps are now following suit. Apps see the highest usage and the most time spent on Facebook. Orkut About To Fall To Facebook In India
TECH CRUNCH - July 7 - While Orkut is much smaller than Facebook worldwide, it does dominate in at least two large countries: Brazil and India. But that soon may change. India looks like it is about to fall to Facebook. In May, 2010, Facebook attracted 18M unique visitors in India, compared to Orkut’s 19.7M (comScore). No Friend Exports From Orkut To Facebook
