Francisco Partners Is Acquiring MyHeritage for $600M
TECH CRUNCH - Feb 25 - Israel's MyHeritage.com - a profitable site that lets people test DNA and track their family lineage and has some 62M users - is getting acquired by Francisco Partners, for $600M. The deal will be announced officially very soon. MyHeritage - which is available in 42 languages - also has a database of some 13B historical records. Users have built and expanded on some 58M family trees on its platform. It's also run ~5 M DNA tests for its users. Part of the deal will see some individual and institutional investors continuing to keep stakes in the company alongside Francisco Partners. They include HP Beteiligungs GmbH, Yuval Rakavy, Japhet, and Gigi Levy.

Family Tree Site Geni Sold To Rival MyHeritage
SF GATE - Nov 29 - Geni.com, the online genealogy site that spawned the successful enterprise social networking company Yammer, was bought by rival MyHeritage of Tel Aviv. Exact terms of the Geni-MyHeritage deal were not disclosed, but the eight-figure transaction was a mix of cash and equity. Sacks started the online family tree building service in 2007. Yammer was created as a better way for Geni workers to communicate internally, and in 2008, it was spun out into a standalone company that grew like wildfire. Earlier this year, Yammer had 4M users at 200K companies in 160 countries.

TECH CRUNCH - Nov 22 - Israeli company MyHeritage, which operates a huge family-based social network has acquired FamilyLink, the developer behind family history content sites FamilyLink.com and WorldVitalRecords.com. While financial terms of the deal are not being disclosed, this is MyHeritage’s seventh and largest acquisition since 2007. Past acquisitions include Germany’s OSN, Poland’s Bliscy.pl, Dutch Family Network ZOOOF and most recently BackupMyTree.

TECH CRUNCH - June 7 - MyHeritage.com, a relatively heavily-funded Israeli startup operating a huge family-based social network, has acquired Bliscy.pl from Poland’s Internet publishing company Wirtualna Polska to solidify its position in the Polish family history market. As Europe’s sixth largest economy, MyHeritage.com points out, Poland is an economic power house within Central Europe. The number of ethnic Poles living abroad is estimated to be ~20M, with the largest concentrations of 10M and 1.6M living in the USA and Germany. ~2.6M Polish users are now on MyHeritage.com.

TECH CRUNCH - Feb 2 - Israeli genealogy site MyHeritage has completed its third acquisition, buying Germany’s OSN. OSN operates seven genealogy sites including Verwandt.de in Germany, Moikrewni.pl in Poland and Dynastree.com in the US. It was launched in 2007 just after LA-based Geni and grew twice as fast as Geni in the early days. Image Recognition Finds, Helps Label Photos
SF CHRONICLE -- Sep 29 -- Google, MyHeritage and a handful of startups recently have adopted image-recognition technology. The technology is billed as a time-saving convenience that makes sorting through the proliferation of online photos and videos a lot easier. MyHeritage introduced a feature that is intended to make it speedier for users to label photos they upload. Pictures with similar faces are grouped together automatically so users can label hundreds of photographs at once instead of one at a time. Google released similar facial-recognition technology this month as part of an update to its Picasa Web Albums online photo sharing service. Google got serious about facial-recognition technology in 2006 when it acquired Neven Vision, a startup focused on the field. TECH CRUNCH -- Sep 6 -- MyHeritage, a "family tree" social network, has raised a new round of funding - $15m in a Series D round led by Index Ventures and joined by current investor Accel Partners.
