Discord CEO Jason Citron stated that the primary reason for acquiring Gas was to acquire its engineering talent.

TECH CRUNCH - Discord announced its acquisition of Gas, an app popular among teens for its positive spin on social media. On Gas, users sign up with their school, add friends, and answer polls about their classmates that are intended to boost users' confidence. Gas reached 7.4M installs and ~$7M in consumer spending since its launch in the summer of 2022. Gas will continue as its standalone app, and the Gas team will be joining Discord to help the efforts grow across new and core audiences.
