Discord Banned ~2k Extremist Communities
WAMU - Apr 6 - Discord removed ~2k communities dedicated to extremism and other violent content in the second half of last year. Of the 2,212 extremist and violent communities taken down from its platform, ~1.5k were first detected by the company. Overall, Discord shut down ~30k communities across the site for various types of abuse. The most often cited violations were for cybercrimes and exploitative content, which includes revenge porn and sexually explicit content involving minors.

Microsoft Is Reportedly 'in the Running' to Buy Discord for ~$10B
ENTREPRENEUR - Mar 2 - VentureBeat was first to report that Discord, the chat/communications platform that's popular with gamers and many other groups, is going through a sales process that could fetch ~$10B. Anonymous sources said that Microsoft is in the running to acquire the company. The report doesn't suggest that a deal is done, or even close to completion, and at least one source claimed Discord is more likely to go public than sell.

Discord Is Working on Clubhouse-like Feature 'Stage Channels'
HINDUSTAN TIMES - Mar 18 - The popular gaming voice chat application Discord could be working on a similar audio rooms feature which the company has reportedly dubbed "Stage Channels." The feature seems to be in beta testing right now but does not seem to be working. If users want to be able to access the Stage Channels before other Discord users, they can head over to Discord's official site and download the company's Public Test Builds in order to receive an early version of the feature.

MIT TECHNOLOGY REVIEW - Jan 26 - The latest apps bring back the intimacy of the spoken word - but there are serious moderation issues to be addressed. The best-known audio-focused network is Clubhouse but it lacks moderation. Gaming chat app Discord has also exploded in popularity. The service uses voice-over-IP software to translate spoken chat into text. By Oct, Discord estimated 6.7M users - up from 1.4M in Feb. Jimi Tele, the CEO of Chekmate, a "text-free" dating app that connects users through voice and video, says he wanted to launch an app that would be "catfish-proof". Users start voice memos that average 5s and then get progressively longer. And while Chekmate has a video option, Tele says the app's users favor using just their voices. This immediacy and authenticity is the reason Gilles Poupardin created Cappuccino, an app that takes voice recordings from a closed group of friends or family and delivers them as downloadable audio.

Discord May Secure a $7 Billion USD Valuation

The company will have doubled its corporate value in just a few months, up from $3.5B USD in June. The monthly active users on the platform this year have risen to ~120M and downloads ~800k a day.
