Chatroulette's Founder Spent 12 Years Solving 'Penis Problem'

UNILAD - Chatroulette quickly disappeared but the founder never gave up, and spent 12 years trying to solve the 'penis problem' for relaunch. Andrey Ternovskiy founded Chatroulette in 2009 when he was 17. Ternovskiy has deployed facial recognition tech capable of detecting 'excessive amounts of exposed skin while simultaneously recognizing faces as appropriate skin', as well as a platform of moderators to review and ban offensive users. He's also hired a group of women to act as 'undercover' users. The site's users doubled during the pandemic. A Law Commission report is calling for 'cyberflashing' to be made a criminal offence.

Chatroulette Is on the Rise Again With Help From AI

WIRED - Dec 28 - A decade ago, Chatroulette (founded in 2009) was popular before collapsing beneath a torrent of male nudity that repelled users. Now, the app, which randomly pairs strangers for video chats, is getting a second chance, since the pandemic that has restricted in-person social contact and advances in artificial intelligence that help filter the most objectionable images. User traffic has nearly tripled since the start of the year, to 4M monthly unique visitors, the most since early 2016, according to Google Analytics. The AI that's helped keep visitors free of unwanted nudity or masturbation has been a good investment, says Founder and chairman Andrey Ternovskiy.

Chatroulette Rolls Out Local And Custom Channels

TECH CRUNCH - July 14 - Chatroulette, the Internet phenomenon that allows users to jump into video chats with random, anonymous strangers, has launched some new features that give users a bit more control over the kinds of fellow Chatrouletters they’re paired up with. Chatroulette has launched a feature called Localroulette that will use your IP address to direct you to a channel with other users from your region. A second, related feature is Channelroulette, which lets you start or join a channel with a custom title/theme. Unsurprisingly, the top user-created channels are primarily focused on sex.
