ENTREPRENEUR - May 4 - Verizon will sell its stake in Yahoo and AOL for $5B. The new conglomerate formed by AOL and Yahoo will be owned by private equity firm Apollo Global Management and known simply as Yahoo. Verizon will maintain a 10% stake in the business. Verizon bought AOL in May 2015 for $4.4B, and Yahoo in Jul 2016 for $4.83B.

TECH CRUNCH - Nov 9 - There have been a number of rumors circulating around Yahoo, Microsoft, and AOL, most of them focusing on a potential AOL/Yahoo merger, or Yahoo’s acquisition by AOL or Microsoft, etc. Well, it seems the companies have officially become linked, by way of display ads. The agreements will allow each to offer the other’s display ads to their respective customers. This strategic partnership creates somewhat of a mega ad network. It’s also a play to fend off the meteoric rise of Facebook (and, in turn, Google, which owns a 75% share of search advertising).

Criterion Capital Partners Acquires Bebo From AOL
TECH CRUNCH - June 17 - The rumors are true: hedge fund Criterion Capital Partners is indeed the buyer of Bebo. AOL is offloading Bebo for less than $10M (other media are reporting a purchase price of around $2.5 million). Criterion Capital Partners will take over Bebo’s global operations immediately and retain its San Francisco-based headquarters. Exact terms of the deal are not being disclosed by either party, but AOL CEO Tim Armstrong sent a note to all employees this morning that suggests our earlier reports that the ability to offset almost the whole sum it paid for Bebo as a tax loss played a big role are correct. Facebook On AIM Is A Hit: 1 Million Users
TECH CRUNCH - Apr 26 - In Feb AOL added the ability to message Facebook friends on AIM, giving Facebook users a nice stand alone client to chat with their Facebook friends. Since then, more than 1M people have used Facebook Connect on AIM to access that Facebook friends list and all of these were new installs of the AIM client. AOL Looks To Sell Bebo And ICQ
MASHABLE - Dec 14 - As the Wall Street Journal reports, AOL is in talks to sell ICQ, the once prominent — but now archaic — instant messaging service. The Wall Street Journal also says that Bebo, the social network AOL acquired in 2008 for $850M, may be on the block. In the ensuing 20 months, Bebo hasn’t quite turned out to be the profit-center AOL hoped it would be. More Social Networks To Remove NY Sex Offenders
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES - Dec 10 - Following the lead of social-networking giants Facebook and MySpace, 13 more social networks - including ones owned by Google, Yahoo and AOL will remove New York sex offenders from their rolls. The 15 have agreed to use New York's Securing and Targeting of Online Predators Act, known as e-STOP, to purge registered sex offenders. AOL, RealNetworks And Yahoo Get $100 Million Bill
TECH CRUNCH – May 1 -- A Federal Court found today that AOL, Real Networks and Yahoo owe $100million to songwriters and composers as back payment for streaming music online. The court ruled on a request from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers to establish reasonable compensation for the playing of their works. Notably ASCAP represents writers and composers and not the record industry, so the request for money is on top of any existing licensing agreements with the RIAA and its constituent members. The court found that "reasonable license fees" are owed from AOL, RealNetworks, and Yahoo for the music streamed and distributed from their sites, retrospective to 2002, at a cost ASCAP counts at $100 million.
